GNOME's near future approach of dealing with files via commonly named applications (like Web, Videos, Notes, etc) has started months ago, action strongly influenced by GNOME's new design-based strategy.
Targeted towards documents handling, GNOME Documents is an application that deals with one's documents via a fancy, easy-to-use, minimalistic interface.
A new major version has been released, 0.3.4, bringing design improvements and a different way of dealing, opening and categorizing various documents.
The main almost buttonless view exposes documents in a big thumbnails with proper previews and allows 1-click opening a PDF document via its own built-in document viewer.
Interacting with a documents is as simple as right-clicking on it, then, via the three summoned icons:
- add to favorite
LibreOffice documents are also supported, nevertheless the actual opening of , for instance, a .odt file can be performed by right-clicking on it-->Open with LibreOffice Writer
How do we install GNOME Documents 0.3.4?
The 0.3.4 version is available in Ubuntu 12.04 via Ubuntu Software Center.
How do we use GNOME Documents 0.3.4?
GNOME Documents depends on Tracker (the tool that tracks the actual documents, making them available for GNOME Documents), meaning, in order to push files into the application, tracker must be configured:
- open Tracker (Search and Indexing) via the Dash by typing tracker in the search area
- then, configure what folders are to be scanned for documents (Documents, the folder, could be a proper choice)
tracker-control -s
Now, in order to make a particular document available to GNOME Documents, copy it in the folder Documents (if this is the folder you previously chosen).
