In this cheat sheet you will find a bunch of the most common Linux commands that you’re likely to use on a regular basis.

On most systems you can lookup detailed information about any command by typing man command_name. You will need to be root user in order to use some of these commands. Be extremely careful as root if you’re not 100% sure about what you’re doing. You can make your system unusable. Even if you have a dual boot setup you may not be able to access any of your installed operating systems. VLC media player (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG, DivX/Xvid, Ogg, and many more) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. However in recent years it has also become a extremely powerful server to stream live and on demand video in several formats to our network and the Internet.

To install VLC on Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install vlc

Ubuntu 12.04's sound theme contest finalized with sound number one

Weeks ago, Ubuntu sound theme contest has been launched, aimed at choosing and then designing a new sound theme, suitable for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

From the preselected four sounds, the developers selected one, sound number 1, the users's choice from more than 2000 surveys, backed by various arguments ("It almost spells out U-bun-tu", "An idea of a future, dynamism and creativity", "It's distinctive, playful, lively and yet restrained, soothing and modest", etc).

Sound number one, basically a startup sound, is to be refined and adjusted: "increase the warmth of tone", "tighten the end note", "make it more human, less synthesized" and then landed in Precise Pangolin.

According to Ubuntu's Calum Pringle (involved in the above sound theme) "unfortunately only the startup will land for 12.04".

Firefox To Get A New Default Theme, Other Enhancements

According to the Firefox 2012 roadmap, Mozilla plans to introduce some major changes and new features this year, including a new theme called Australis:

Firefox - GNOME 3

Firefox - Ubuntu

Firefox - OSX

Firefox - Windows 7

Unfortunately, there are still no plans to support tabs in the titlebar for Linux (because of GTK limitations), but most other UI changes should be available for Linux too.

As you can see in the images above, Firefox will use Chrome-like curved tabs on all platforms and apparently, the menu will be moved next to the locationbar. Further more, a new built-in download panel should finally replace the separate Firefox download window. There's already a custom Firefox build that comes with this new download panel:

Besides the changes mentioned above, there are many other new features that should land in Firefox this year:

a new tab page (an initial version is already available in the latest Firefox Aurora builds) powered by the Awesomebar, with a new "speed dial" and new home tab
Chrome migration
Web Apps (-webapp mode) and WebApps Marketplace integration
reworked session restore and a new Firefox restore which lets you restore bookmarks, passwords, etc.
Firefox Share: share links / update status across social networks
Firefox Login: user-centric site logins - one login for all the websites you us
in-line Preferences Manager
seamless plug-in install and update experience
built-in PDF viewer

GNOME Contacts 3.3.90 released with improved UI and new features

The new redesigned GNOME applications have started to land in Ubuntu, and, shortly, after the revamped GNOME Documents, just now, GNOME Contacts has been updated to version 3.3.90 bringing new UI refinements, as well as new features.

What is new in GNOME Contacts 3.3.90?

at first launch, there is a new dialog following two approaches: Online Accounts (handles online accounts, like Google and Windows Live) and Local Address Book.
Selecting Online Accounts opens GNOME Online Accounts.

various UI improvements with monochrome icons, following the new GNOME Design-approach

How do we install GNOME Contacts 3.3.90?
The application is available in Ubuntu 12.04's Ubuntu Software Center (no PPA required).

Worth mentioning
The account configuration dialog appears only once when on first launch, meaning, if one chooses Use Local Address Book, the app will always open only with local contacts.

In order to restore (on next launch) the configuration dialog (to be able to select Online Accounts):

install dconf-editor
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
open dconf-editor, navigate to org-->gnome-->Contacts-->uncheck did-initial-setup

New Ubuntu Sound Theme Winner Chosen

The results of the recent Ubuntu Sound Theme survey, which asked users to pick a new start up for Ubuntu 12.04 from a shortlist of 4 sounds, are in.

The winning sound was was Sound 1 – which you can hear in the following video.

The next step for the Ubuntu Design Team and the soundscape creator is to work on adapting the sound to user feedback gained from the survey. This includes making the sound ‘more human, less synthesised’, lowering the pitch, and increasing ‘the warmth of the tone’.

If all of these tasks can be achieved to a satisfactory result then all that will be left is to land the chime in Ubuntu 12.04.

UbuntuOne Files Lands in @Vodafone AppSelect Store

Vodafone have chosen to stock the Ubuntu One Files app in their custom Android app store ”Vodafone AppSelect“.

The app store, which comes pre-loaded on Vodafone-branded Android mobiles across Europe, provides a range of applications that have gone through Vodafone’s thorough app approval process. This process includes QA testing, an assessment of ‘value delivered by the application’, provision of approved graphical assets, and more.

Other than a different logo tehre is no difference between the AppSelect version of Ubuntu One Files and the version to be found on the Android Market.

Ubuntu One Files gives on-the-go access to music, photos, files and folders stored in your Ubuntu One cloud. In-app options for publishing, renaming and downloading files are provided, as is support for the auto-uploading of photos taken.

South-African company Vodacom, part owned by Vodafone, launched the Ubuntu WebBook last year.

Ubuntu One Files is available to download now from the Vodafone AppSelect store in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Russia, Italy, Greece and Portugal.
