Ubuntu's default virtual keyboard, Onboard 0.9.7, released with new themes, behavior enhancements and numerous bug fixes (Ubuntu 12.04)

One of Ubuntu's most developed applications is definitely Onboard, the default virtual keyboard, that adds serious new features with any release (especially starting with the 0.9.5 version).

Onboard 0.9.7 has just landed in Precise Pangolin, bringing new themes, smart behavior and UI refinements.

What is new in Onboard 0.9.7?

  • new monochrome appindicator icon matching both Ambiance and Radiance themes with enhanced behavior (show/hide Onboard by middle-clicking on its appindicator)

  • ability to resize Onboard with all mouse buttons (when the mouse pointer is near an edge or corner, resizing can be performed by press & hold, then drag with every button of the mouse, like right-button, middle-button, etc)
  • selected GTK+ theme-aware behavior (if, for instance, the user's GTK+ theme is Ambiance and the Onboard theme is Typist, switching the GTK+ theme to Radiance, automatically switches Onboard theme to default, switching the GTK+ theme to High Contrast, automatically switches Onboard to High Contrast, furthermore, switching back to the "original" GTK+ theme Ambiance, automatically switches Onboard to Typist, thus remembering the theme previously set)
  • new beautifully designed themes, Typist and Model M (change themes under Onboard appindicator-->Preferences-->Theme)
  • new accessibility themes, High Contrast, High Contrast, Inverse and Low Contrast
  • new smart behavior, option to automatically summon Onboard when editing text files like for instance with Gedit, under Onboard appindicator-->Preferences-->General-->check Auto-show when editing text (when a text file is opened, Onboard automatically appears, but, if one move the focus to a, for instance, web-browser, Onboard disappears, reappearing again when the text file gains focus)
  • improved layouts
  • proper usage under Unity-2D
  • numerous bug fixes
