VLC media player is a full-fledged media player, encoder and streamer, capable of handling numerous file formats.
The 2.x series has started (Ubuntu/Linux version) a work, in progress at the moment, on enriching the UI, adding redesigned pieces all over the place (like for instance, the scrubber, progressbar, controlbar, etc), nevertheless VLC gained additional features, too.
VLC 2.0 is available in Precise's Ubuntu Software Center, thus removing the need to add PPAs.
VLC 2.x can be installed on another Ubuntu versions (Oneiric, Natty, etc) via its official PPA (to add the PPA take a look at our previous article, where "What is new?" is presented, too).
