LibreOffice 3.5 final has been released, after months of development and thousands of code commits, bringing Ubuntu's default office suite to a new level of features, stability and overall improvements.

What is new in LibreOffice 3.5?

  • improved user interface in Writer with redesigned footer, header and page break
  • enhanced typographical features and a new built-in Grammar checker for English (and other languages) when in Writer
  • real-time interactive Writer word count window
  • improved option to embedd multimedia/color palletes into ODF documents when in Impress/Draw
  • Microsoft Visio import filter added to Impress
  • support for up to 10.000 sheets in Calc
  • Calc features multiple selections in autofilter and a new multi-line input area
  • much more

LibreOffice 3.5 is "the first release where the contribution of local communities and associations, such as ALTA in Brazil, has been acknowledged", furthermore the developers are "encouraging the development of a global, open and diverse ecosystem where companies, associations, local communities and volunteers share the common objective of developing the best free office suite ever".

How do we install LibreOffice 3.5?
Download the archive, unpack it and type in a terminal (if you unpacked the archive in Downloads)

cd Downloads/LibO_3.5.0rc3_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US/DEBS

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
cd desktop-integration
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

LibreOffice 3.5 is to probably land in Ubuntu 12.04 (via the Update Manager) and in Ubuntu 11.10 and other versions (via its official PPA) in the next hours/days.
